Presumably, casinos won't be opening in Thailand. If Anutin Charnvirakul is chosen to be the kingdom's next prime minister, that is the most likely result.
The House of Representatives of the National Assembly selected Charnvirakul to replace Paetongtarn Shinawatra on Friday.
Charnvirakul, a seasoned politician who was born into a wealthy Chinese family in Bangkok, was deputy prime minister under three prime ministers, including Shinawatra, before he resigned in June due to a falling out with his immediate superior. On Sunday, Charnvirakul received royal approval and was formally appointed prime minister.
“I’d like to take an oath that I determine to perform my duties to my fullest capabilities, with honesty and virtue,” Charnvirakul said.
After earning an engineering degree from Hofstra University in New York in the late 1980s, Charnvirakul, the heir to a significant construction group, Sino-Thai Engineering and Construction PCL, first joined his family's business. Before going into politics in 1996, he managed a number of significant Sino-Thai projects, such as the building of Suvarnabhumi Airport in Bangkok.
Duration of Casino Odds
Early in July, Shinawatra was stripped of her duties after it was revealed that she had criticized the Thai military in a phone conversation with former prime minister and Senate president Hun Sen of Cambodia. Shinawatra was the fifth prime minister of Thailand and the second Shinawatra to be ousted in 17 years.
Charnvirakul's allegiance to the PM ended as a result of the call. Shinawatra's Pheu Thai lost control of Parliament as a result of the Bhumjaithai Party leader taking his party with him.
Charnvirakul became the front-runner to become the next prime minister of the Southeast Asian country after Shinawatra was removed from office by the Constitutional Court.
Charnvirakul is primarily recognized for advocating for the use of medicinal cannabis. In his capacity as public health minister, Charnvirakul gave one million marijuana plants to Thai homes so they may grow medical cannabis without a license.
Charnvirakul has been adamantly opposed to allowing slot machines and table games to enter Thailand, even though he supported marijuana for its holistic uses. Charnvirakul has supported popular opposition to the liberalization of casino gaming, notwithstanding the prevalence of clandestine gambling dens.
The push to bring Las Vegas-style resorts to Bangkok and other large cities has been led by Shinawatra and her Pheu Thai. According to the previous prime minister, these resorts would boost tax income, generate new jobs, and assist bring tourist and leisure travel back to pre-COVID-19 levels.
The PM Disapproves of Gambling
Except for the Government Lottery and parimutuel horse racing betting, gambling is still prohibited in Thailand. However, underground gaming rings have caused gambling devastation to numerous families.
Using his position as premier, Charnvirakul has promised to "return power to the people to decide on the future of the country." He also committed to target unlawful gaming.
"The government will take firm action against drug trafficking, human trafficking, scammers, gambling, and online gambling. We will work in cooperation with neighboring countries and international partners to eradicate all forms of social threats,” Charnvirakul declared.
According to a number of surveys, the public is generally against casinos due to worries about addiction and other potential drawbacks, such as an increase in crime.
